Meet Our Psychological Advisor

Dr. SwellBald Girls Do Lunch is delighted to welcome Dr. Lila Swell. Dr. Swell is a full-time Professor of Humanistic Psychology at Queens College (City University of New York). She is the author of “Success: You Can Make it Happen!,” an inspiring and powerful step-by-step self-help book, and has created other publications and programs about raising self-esteem, solving problems and learning to communicate more effectively, including “Let’s Work it Out,” a program that helps teachers lead students in communication and problem solving.

Dr. Swell’s advisory role with Bald Girls Do Lunch is to support and guide our community in how to become our best selves, how to live in harmony with ourselves to increase our successes every day, and how to use nonjudgmental communication to benefit ourselves and those around us. She will also offer insights into how the feelings we have about our own health and appearance — and the actions these feelings generate — can affect our experiences and the world around us, either positively or negatively.

One of Dr. Swell’s passions is to encourage critical and creative thinking so that we can objectively observe our own actions. This skill is as important for women with alopecia areata as it is for the thousands of students who have taken her courses or followed her programs. Her strategies are fully aligned with Bald Girls Do Lunch’s mission of helping women with alopecia live beautiful and vibrant lives. We are excited to share her insights with you.

Here is an example: “I have been teaching “Educating for Success” for years,” says Dr. Swell. “I teach students, housewives, businessmen, career women — everyone and anyone; and the question that comes up again and again is ‘Can I be a success?’ My answer has always been yes. Absolutely yes.” She consistently emphasizes that as a human being, you need to “mobilize your strengths and identify your system of values,” and teaches tried-and-true methods that we can apply to our daily lives.

While Dr. Swell is not in private practice and does not make appointments to counsel individuals, she is highly skilled at working with and advising people dealing with all kinds of success-related issues.

Dr. Swell is also a gifted speaker and a genuine cheerleader for happy living. Bald Girls Do Lunch is honored to have her on board.
