In 2008 the news releases were afire including coverage on the network morning talk shows that a baldness cure was “right around the corner” courtesy of the start-up Follica using a novel scientific discovery by Dr. George Cotsarelis at UPenn. Standing by our advice then, we still say “Don’t hold your breath.”
So a woman with alopecia universalis in the eastern US held a shave-your-head fundraiser with some guy friends last month and donated about $1,000 raised to an old organization charged with the mission to do research on causes and cures of alopecia.
All I can say is this : Does she realize that not one cent of the funds donated to research will help a woman with alopecia today? Not a penny.
And does she understand how far that same $1000 if used for Bald Girls Do Lunch would go in changing the lives of hundreds of women with alopecia? and inspire the little girls who look up to us today? ( ie discussion lunches, beauty workshops, educational materials, real-time online support and Bigs & Littles events just to name a few activities)
Research can be worthwhile. But we have our work cut out for us when women with alopecia areata don’t support programs that directly improve the lives of women with alopecia areata. For a long time, research used to be the only outlet for donating money to support the cause of alopecia. That’s no longer the case with the creation of BGDL and another organization we love, CAP - Children’s Alopecia Project
What do you think? Please send me your comments: thea@baldgirlsdolunch.org
And if you do donate to research, also click here to help women today. Thank you.

First, for “www.baldgirlsdolunch.org”, our ever evolving website and photo gallery.
Second, for “The Beauty Event”, March 2009 in Larchmont, NY with the Bobbi Brown makeup artists of Neimans at The Westchester.
“This event was the most rewarding, life changing experience for the makeup artists. It’s amazing to take your profession and be able to affect lives in an event driven by passion and not by sales. As a team we had a greater feeling of accomplishment than with our usual work for strictly superficial cosmetic needs. Treating each individual took on extra special meaning that day. Someone said: ‘I look so beautiful I don’t want to wash my face.’” - Jill K Imbrogno, Bobbi Brown acct mgr/ Neimans, White Plains, NY
Holiday time for many means friends and family gathering round. This season, you might be new to alopecia. Or, maybe it’s resurfaced. Or, maybe you’ve decided to take a new approach and let others in a bit more about what this condition is and isn’t.
Our BGDL appearance on the TODAY show can help. Just send the link around or click, sit back and enjoy yourself. There are millions of us. Often hiding in plain sight. All around the world.
“I love my BGDL brow set with powder, brush and sealer. My eyebrows look natural and I never need to re-apply during the day. Even after a rigorous aerobic workout they are perfectly set, and as a fitness instructor with “all eyes on me” this is extremely important. I feel entirely confident and having that peace of mind is just as essential as the aesthetic outcome of the product. My friends tell me that my brows look full and natural. Thank you!” - S, Alopecia 6 months
“I have found it works great over a tattoo. It gets rid of the grayish/bluish color that a lot of permanent make-up gets after a while….I use it to make by brows lighter than they are naturally as it goes better with the lighter hair I wear. I recommend it to my customers.” - D, Alopecia 15 years
Note from BGDL.…..new projects for 2010 include an online make-up store for your convenience. Till then? brows@baldgirlsdolunch.org . All proceeds support the growth of our community and outreach to alopecian women everywhere.

Topical tacrolimus (Protopic) has FDA approval and is commonly used for dermatitis and psoriasis. It’s action on T-cells (types of white blood cells known as lymphocytes) made it a natural for trials on alopecia areata patients, AA also being a T-cell mediated condition. Dr. Kevin McElwee summarizes the results on an AA study and describes where research might next look to further test its effectiveness. Read more…..

Failing to provide required information including infection risks in promotions for Latisse, an FDA warning letter went out last month to Allergan.
“…For example, the webpages omit important risks associated with Latisse, including the risk of bacterial keratitis from contamination of Latisse or the applicators, and the risk of use with contact lenses. In addition, the webpages do not mention the potential for disparity between eyes in length, thickness, pigmentation, number of eyelashes or vellus hairs, and the direction of eyelash growth. Moreover, the body of the “About Safety” webpage fails to communicate the potential for excess hair growth outside of the treatment area.” - FDA

The open label, non-randomized efficacy study using Plaquenil (hydrocholroquine) lead by Drs. Hordinsky (University of Minnesota) and Kalish (State University of New York at Stony Brook) was completed in January, 2008. The clinical trial used 16 patients of both sexes ages 18 and over with severe scalp alopecia areata with and without loss of body hair. Statistical analysis was performed on sections of the scalp to determine if there was any significant regrowth compared to pre-treatment images.

“It’s not the shape of the woman’s face that really decides, but the attitude of the hat.” - Frank Olive
This Frank Olive hat makes a gorgeous bridal hat on a hairless head. It’s not going to slide around the way a traditional wide brimmed bridal hat will. It’s going to show your face if that’s the look you’re going for. You could also sew hair wefts inside to have a fringe of hair along the bottom if you wanted the look of hair without a full wig.

In December, this blog said “Lumigan a Hot Topic….” following the FDA approval for this glaucoma medication to be used in cosmetic use for growing longer, fuller lashes. I have seen it work for alopecians who have some lashes, albeit very thin and short.
Have I used it? No. I have blue eyes and I like them a lot. One of the side effects of Lumigan (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) is permanently turning blue eyes to brown along with the risk of skin hyper-pigmentation at the application site which may be reversible. Great care must be taken in maintaining sterility of the applicator to avoid contamination and infections. Safe and effective pediatric use has not been established.
The active ingredient is bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%. Prescribed as a glaucoma med it’s known as Lumigan. Recently approved by the FDA for lash enhancement, the product is called Latisse.

“It was devastating being a confident homecoming queen at 17, shortly after finding a scared hairless girl staring back at me in the mirror” - Dana Crook, 22
“Being with Dana has shed a light on the complications of this disorder. Hair has been made to be such an important part of life,”Alex Whitley, 24
Our very best wishes to Alex for a fantastic climb on Mt. Elbrus. Thank you both for setting in motion not just awareness today, but the future of BGDL activities for the alopecian women of Indiana.
From the University of British Columbia, noted dermatologist and hair researcher Dr Jerry Shapiro has proposed a clinical trial using intradermal injections of Botox (Botulinum toxin A) to stimulate hair growth in patients with alopecia areata. The proposed interventional study is designed as randomized and double blind ( subject and investigator) using a placebo control.
The hypothesis: that intralesional injections of Botulinum Toxin A can be used as a treatment for AA. Potential points of action of this treatment include changes in neurotransmitters, which either directly or via neuroimmunologic mechanisms influence cytokines (proteins that serve as messengers between cells) that are responsible for the hair growth arrest in alopecia areata.
From the 2009 annual meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research comes a presentation about a tiny study at the University of Cairo (dermatology researcher Marwa Fawzi) using 8 children with extensive alopecia areata. At no small cost of pain, here’s what the kids were subjected to: bits of skin with hair follicles were removed, grown in a lab for stem cell multiplication and a month later injected in numerous locations back into bald areas of the scalp.
Ouch for an adult! double ouch on a child! Result 6 months later? 5 children had 50% hair increase, 2 had less than 50% and one had none. New skin samples showed that injected stem cells had a stimulating affect on previously dormant follicles. No report of long term results.
Why would someone do this study on children? It’s reported that a new study will include 30 children. It’s hard enough to endure the difficulties of a bald childhood without 1) being subjected to the pain of scalp injections and 2) running the risk of deep disappointment when scalp hair fails to regrow.
For the well being of children, is this kind of study really “helpful” as this reporter says or a recipe for additional emotional stress?

My lunch mate leaned in closer at our booth. “Your skin…it’s so…I don’t know what to say……may I touch your head?”
Having alopecia areata means thinking about things you never dreamed of thinking about - new concepts of beauty and how to achieve it. We can be nearly hairless yet a few straggler hairs stubbornly refuse to bite the dust. So how to get it all flawlessly smooth? Most women are borrowing their guy’s razor or buying something pink - you know, a girlie razor with a long handle. Whatever’s on sale. Not me.
The problem with the usual long handle is that you can’t really feel where that blade is going or where it’s been. On a face or a leg you can watch where it’s going. But on a round head? Not so easy.
Try this little kinesthetic test to feel the difference. Hold a long pencil at the lead end with the eraser tip on your bald head. Drag the eraser in straight lines from front to back across your whole head. Try to make parallel lines close together. Now put the pencil down and do the same thing with a finger tip. See? your finger tip lines are faster, straighter and closer together. You have much more sensory feedback, more motor control and that means a faster, better, safer shave.
That’s why I use a little blade gizmo made by headblade.com It’s not pink. It’s black and yellow…a guy’s blade holder. But I absolutely love it. Nobody is paying me to say this. HeadBlade was a top design of the year in 2000. Well deserved.
Thanks Todd! My morning routine’s fast and my alopecian beauty quick and easy.
Thumbs up to the BelgraviaCentre.com (UK) for improving a headline before adding it to their blog. Australia’s Sunshine Coast daily printed the dreadful “Distressing Truth about Alopecia” but it was thankfully re-titled by Belgravia into the far less dreadful “Bald Women Reveal What Life with Alopecia is Like” - an informative interview with Pat and Ivonna living beautiful, sucessful lives with alopecia areata.
The future dims further for treatments - another reason why BGDL is passionately helping women live beautifully and successfully today.
Dermatology Times reports on the study by Dr. Bruce Strober of the New York University Medical Center’s Department of Dermatology who conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-week trial with alefacept (Amevive) in patients with chronic severe alopecia areata.
“According to Dr. Strober, trial results were resoundingly unsuccessful. There was no difference between the treated group and the placebo group, and there was a very low level response in both groups.” Click here to read more.
