Nobody likes the way their hair looks after being under a hat. Wigs are no exception. And hats over wigs, especially in cold weather are uncomfortable. We’re in the heat wave of summer, but it’s not too early to plan for the coldest days of winter.
If you live in or plan to visit the north you want to feel both toasty warm and chic. Consider the layered option of a luxurious and wide fur headband over your wig or over a flat knit cap. Pretty, versatile and can be worn as a neck warmer or a cap accessory. Big selection and big sales at fursource.com

Donating your long hair for a good cause? Please let us know. We have a new project in the works to use donated hair (ponytail length) to make ponytails in hats for our women.
So often we hear ” If only I could wear a ponytail again!” Well, now we’re working to make that a hat-reality.

Style, warmth and fashion, too, for the prettiest alopecian look.
For inspiration, check out this season’s cashmere and wool Newsboy hat from Juicy Couture.

“It’s not the shape of the woman’s face that really decides, but the attitude of the hat.” - Frank Olive
This Frank Olive hat makes a gorgeous bridal hat on a hairless head. It’s not going to slide around the way a traditional wide brimmed bridal hat will. It’s going to show your face if that’s the look you’re going for. You could also sew hair wefts inside to have a fringe of hair along the bottom if you wanted the look of hair without a full wig.

Umm…You’re not still shopping at cancer hat sites are you? Or sites that slap the word alopecia on a hat your great grandma would wear? Let us be your guide to the markets with things you’ll really wear and feel great in!
Grab your 2009 Fall fashion inspiration with these ideas:
Get style with the newsgirl- part cloche, part slouchy beret. The deep newsboy style with satin lining or a twist on the classic beret with a cabled cashmere blend beret. If you can’t live without a baseball style (but please try to wean off them for daily wear) try switching to a more feminine military style with details of ribbon, piping and satin lining. And for super chilly days have a cuff style in your collection. Get out some chunky earrings, wear this stunner
and jump into fall with grace and style.
Very windy or cold? The ultra-chic fur or faux fur halo works as well over a wig as it does over a large head wrap scarf.

Banish those unisex beanies and cowboy bandannas from the bedroom. You would think a little sleep hat would be an easy thing to make; yet few pass the Thea test. This one has it all: soft, just stretchy enough, feminine, pretty, durable, lightweight, warm. Flurry fleece for me. Thank you hatswithheart.com, BGDL supporter for Salt Lake City.

For alopecian women and all women, fashionable hats are THE hottest accessory and we hope you’re experimenting with lots of new styles and colors for spring and summer. Look for deep hats made by Grace..the better to layer over a pretty scarf. Try on Scala straw hats for their comfy inner band tension.
Since traditional baseball hats are just not the look we want to see on alopecian women, mapcapz.net is a refreshing resource for a more feminine touch. Enter code BGDL at check-out for a 20% discount. Sweet!

Men can often buy hats in half inch size increments. Women’s hats are most often “one size fits all” unless you’re shopping at a custom milliner. Less hair from alopecia can mean looser hats, especially if your head is smaller than average to begin with.
Click here for headnhome.com and their padded and cushy hat inserts ( velcro or sticky-adhesive) to tighten up a hat by a half or a full size…or just keep layerin’ them on till your favorite hat fits again.

Knots of Love is a wonderful nonprofit founded by Christine Shively in Newport Beach, California to provide soft and much needed caps and hats to people with hairloss from medical conditions. San Diego BGDL member, Mary Marshall, and Christine took time out to pose for photos recently. KOL caps will be distributed at the upcoming southern CA lunches. Knitting and knotting volunteers are needed all across the country. Contact knots-of-Love.org to find out how to help.
Perfect as sleep hats or casual caps, another combo is wearing ultra-comfy “hair bouquet” under-hair from healingheadwear.com with a scarf or cap. Terri at healingheadwear.com is generously providing a donation to BGDL for each member purchase.

Hats With Heart, an American headwear company, wants to do more for the hat needs of healthy, hair-challenged women like us. But first, they want to know what we need. Do we want the same things as women with temporary hairloss? Style, price, fabric and more.
HatsWithHeart.com is generously donating $5 to BGDL for every completed survey. No purchase and you won’t even be taken to their website.
Click here to begin the survey.
Send this link to every woman you know with any type of hair loss. Thank you for your participation and support.
Update: Thank you for participating. The survey is now closed.
